I started a juice cleanse with Raw Generation but had a bad reaction after drinking just one juice. I felt weak and dizzy, like my blood sugar crashed. The cleanse I got is the protein one, so half the juices have protein, but I still felt terrible.
I called my doctor, and she said this can happen if you drink a sugary juice on an empty stomach. She reassured me that it’s not diabetes, just a reaction to the sugar spike. Now I’m thinking of modifying the cleanse by having the juices alongside regular food instead of replacing meals.
Has anyone else had this happen? How do you handle juice cleanses without feeling like this?
Even if no sugar is added, fruit-based juices are still packed with natural sugar. Apples and dates especially have a lot. If you want better control over what you’re drinking, making your own juice is a good idea.
One general rule—if it tastes sweet, it’s probably not the best for blood sugar levels.

Yeah, that’s what I’m realizing. I’m mostly just annoyed because I spent money on this cleanse, and now my freezer is full of something I’m hesitant to drink.

That’s understandable. No need to waste them though—you could drink them occasionally instead of all at once. Think of them more as a treat rather than a full cleanse.
@Bailey
That makes sense. I usually eat a balanced diet and don’t have much sugar, so I think my body was just thrown off. I’ll try drinking them with meals instead.

Juice gets absorbed much faster than eating whole fruit because the fiber is removed. That’s why it spikes blood sugar quickly.
Juices have good nutrients, but they also come with rapid glucose spikes.

If you want to balance your blood sugar, try adding bitter melon juice to your routine. It’s supposed to help.

Are you sure it was a sugar crash? How much sugar was in the juice?
I didn’t make it, but the label says no added sugar. The sweetness comes from apples and dates. One juice had 27g of sugar, and another had 17g. I felt dizzy and had heart palpitations, which matches what I read about reactive hypoglycemia.
@Lake
If you’ve ever had a soda before, that’s about the same amount of sugar. Are you sure it wasn’t an allergic reaction? Maybe post a picture of the ingredients?

I don’t drink soda or eat much sugar, so this was a lot for me. My doctor confirmed that was the cause.

You might find it helpful to track your blood sugar. Some people use glucose monitors even if they’re not diabetic to see how foods affect them.
Interesting, I didn’t know non-diabetics monitored glucose levels like that.
