Most kitchens I see here tend to feature painted cabinets. I would have expected to see more stunning wood cabinetry alongside the beautiful countertops and other elements. Is it because custom wood cabinets are really expensive (my parents recently redid their kitchen, and the cabinets alone cost $60k), or are they just not in style right now? Are wood grain cabinets considered too busy when paired with wood floors, backsplash, and granite countertops, making them less common?
When we renovate our house, we plan to use three colors: medium gray, white, and natural wood.
I’m a bit late to the party, but I’ll still throw in my two cents for future readers. I recently purchased stained wood cabinets after painting my previous ones. Never again will I purchase a painted cabinet. Regardless of what you’re told, they chip readily, and the only way to restore an even appearance is to paint the entire cabinet. Crown molding and floor-to-ceiling wood cabinets appear elegant and classic, and if they suffer any dents or scratches, they can easily be repaired with a stain pen. If you choose those, your backsplash and island can add a dash of color. Hardware and trim are additional ways to modernize a little.
I recently renovated my Mexican home, which included the kitchen. In fact, I’m moving back in today! We chose solid oak cabinets that was custom-built to fit the oddly shaped room. I am ecstatic with the outcome; it’s stunning, and regardless of what might be in style right now, this stuff is classic.
@Bailey It’s such a joyful and exhilarating sensation to return to a renovated home and kitchen! I adore oak. This question was prompted by my parents’ walnut, but I can’t help but adore their brand-new cabinets whenever I visit their updated kitchen. and giving them a whiff.
Although darker woods are in right now and white oak is out, painted wood is still quite traditional and generally the most ageless. The majority of my clients ask for it, therefore we’ll create wood accents like the interiors of cabinets or islands.
Because there are additional finishing stages involved in designing custom manufactured cabinets, they are usually more expensive. I design them myself. However, if you’re looking at a more expensive wood, such as quarter-sawn/rift white oak or walnut, this isn’t the case.
A painted cabinet, whether it comes from a factory or a local business, can also be completed by almost anybody. I think it takes far more ability to make a wood grain look unified and high-quality.
@Cabby I can understand why painting would be the most classic. Moreover, wood cabinets practically feel like the focal point of the room, while other materials only look easier to use as a design feature. A stunning focal piece, but not as flexible as the rest of the piece
@Eminem I was like lighter wood when we went shopping a few years ago, and I wanted a modern cabinet with a flat front or a shaker style that looked clean. Large flat slabs of high-quality wood were significantly more expensive, so instead we painted a low-profile shaker in a stunning shade that is halfway between navy and turquoise. Although we would have like the wood appearance a little more—we really do love our kitchen—the substantial additional expense didn’t seem warranted.
At least in my hometown, solid wood cabinetry is more of a specialty trade. It would be extremely costly and time-consuming to complete the necessary jointing process given the materials and time needed. In my twelve years of designing kitchens, I have never once seen or heard of someone making solid wood kitchen cabinets.
Their one benefit is that they give your cabinets a really classy, conventional appearance on the inside. Drawbacks include material cost, lacquering/treating, and potential warping. These days, high-quality, man-made wood is just the best choice. Not only are they much less expensive, but they’re also just as durable, simpler to change, and easier to clean. Just the more sensible choice
@Gordon Man Solid wood cabinets are unimaginable; they would require a great deal of time and expertise. All I meant was wood… showing up? like the outermost layer that is visible? I don’t really understand any of this. However, everything here makes logic.
@Eminem I’m really sorry, I misidentified you. I thought the cabinets were solid wood since it was mentioned that your parents renovated them and spent $60,000.
Although we have done a lot in the past, it is not as often as it once was. I still occasionally get one, but I’ll make sure to post it if we have another.
@Gordon Although the kitchen is large, to be honest, I initially thought it was a good deal for the price.
Yes, I’d be thrilled to see!
We will begin remodeling our kitchen in a few weeks. We’re getting flat front, clear maple, custom cabinets made of solid wood. I’m very excited; they’re going to be amazing.
