I’ve just designed my first kitchen as I’m moving into my own place soon. It’s a pretty small space. What do you all think of the layout I came up with? The wall tiles are white at the moment, but I’m considering changing them. Should I stick with white or go for a different color? Also, what color would you suggest for the walls? I’d love to hear your thoughts since this is my first time doing a kitchen!
How deep is your sink? The double bowl with a laundry machine and dishwasher underneath seems like a lot. You might also be missing out on some good space in the corners. Are you using something like a Magic Corner pullout system? Corner space can be tricky, especially in a small kitchen. Also, the toe kick looks pretty tall. I’m in the US though, so maybe it’s different where you are. You might be able to use that space for more storage.
Personally, I avoid open shelves in kitchens, but if you like them, maybe reconsider having just a small shelf next to a small cabinet. You could have cabinets above where you cook and shelves where you clean. Just an idea. Good luck with the kitchen!
The left half of the sink, over the washing machine, is just a drying area. The actual sink ends where the cabinet next to the dishwasher begins. The upper corner has a shelf, and I’ve got trash bins under the sink. The dishwasher is right next to them, so yeah, I lose some bottom corner space. The toe kick height is adjusted to my height. Appreciate your advice!
If you already have a dishwasher, maybe a drying mat would save you some counter space instead of that big sink. I don’t do much hand washing myself, but when I do, I just dry things with a towel. Saved a lot of space that way!
If you cook a lot, especially with oily stuff, black tiles will show smudges easily and be harder to keep clean. Just something to think about.
Also, unless your overhead cabinets are already done, maybe just run them along the long wall and leave the corner open for some artwork or something. Corner cabinets up top can be annoying to reach.
If you have hard water, keeping a black sink clean can be tough. Black surfaces in general are harder to keep spotless. If you’re okay with that, cool. But maybe think about running lighting under all the upper cabinets, not just over the stove, because it could get dark (especially with black surfaces).
Also, your fridge door—could it open the other way? It might hit the wall as it is now. And like someone else said, maybe skip the corner cabinet overhead and just run them along the long wall. That way, you don’t pay more for not much extra space.
