I hate choosing paint colors!

We are preparing to demo and rehab our 1990s kitchen. White tile with oak cabinetry. Ew. And we’re done with 23 different paint samples, each costing $5 or more. Picking the right hue can be a pain in the ass. We can’t seem to locate the “one” color that goes well with the cabinets and countertops. Greats and naturals are our options. Alabaster is the color of the cabinets, and grey will be used for the quartz countertops. Ugh. This is more difficult than selecting our outside color for the entire house. I am very frustrated right now. Thank you for allowing me to vent. Time for another Kentucky mule to think about it.

We are on the other side of this. We don’t take clients that haven’t worked with a professional designer. Here’s the reason. I’ve seen too many folks that think they can just pick it all out. And then we’ve torn your life apart, the house is dusty, the kids are upset, your dog is terrified, you haven’t seen the cat except at night for weeks. Tomorrow we need all the paint colors, or tile choices, or switch and dimmer choices, the countertop… On and on. If you don’t have an answer it costs money. It might slow things down for weeks. I know a lot of folks that regret their choices. A lot. Some that have had us back to repaint cabinets we painted two years ago. One couple had us repaint their entire house because the color in their houses light looks pink.

Why do folks that don’t do this for a living think they’d be great at it the first time? That isn’t how you approached your career. You didn’t go to college for colors. Let someone that did pick it. Do what you went to college for.

@Anne How would I go about finding a designer that would be willing to assist with a modest work when I already have a cabinet maker and a contractor scheduled to install and a countertop ordered?

I am guessing that is not a tjing. I’d pay someone to choose a color for the island and design the back splash. But it seems like too little a job.

@Bailey You did things in the wrong order and now you have to figure it out for yourself. A designer is the first one, not the last.

@Anne I agree… Except, I already had a contractor and cabinet maker from a previous project. I suppose I did not want to pay for the designer cabinet maker.

@Bailey Our designer can get cabinets for clients at a lower cost than I can. She does roughly 100 kitchens each year. Because a complete remodeling takes some time, I am unable to take advantage of such offers.

I’ve been doing this for many years. But this is my first full Reno. I’ve done interiors enough to know what works and what doesn’t but this is MY house and I’m not alone in this venture. My wife has her ideas and I have mine. So far we have agreed on everything from counters to cabinets. Drawer amenities and pullout locations. Knife block and utensil storage. Everything is in play now. And we are completely satisfied with our choices. All but the color of the little bit of wall space that needs to be painted. We’ve narrowed it down a ton. But the final choice for a the trigger we can’t pull at the moment. I’m almost tempted to wait until everything is installed before I pick a color. But the way I am and how it think just won’t let me do that.

@Cabby I will attempt to do it tomorrow. I need to paint some splotches on the wall. We have family arriving tonight, so off to the airport I go. If you enjoy picking out colors… You’re about as obsessed as I am about the proper flow of colors and patterns. I’m not sure if that is healthy, though. Lol

This is a photo of the kitchen in its current state. There are no splotches needed.

What of Swiss Coffee

@Dacosta Um, no Swiss coffee is allowed. I used to work in building maintenance, and that was the only color painted on the walls. It’s not funny how much I’m over that particular color right now. It would go if not for the grey tones on the countertops. Swiss coffee is also very generic. This is just my opinion.
