I’m a little worried that if we paint every kitchen cabinet that color, my partner’s vision of dark blue—think navy—will be too intense. We would install a light countertop and backsplash, but I’m still worried that there would be too much gloom. Is there anyone who enjoys their dark blue kitchen? Kindly share your ideas and experiences!
Since everyone has diverse tastes, it’s difficult to respond. The navy cabinetry might be easily offset if your kitchen has adequate lighting. Effective recessed and over-the-island lighting, as well as under-cabinet strip lighting, can significantly improve the appearance of a space.
To gain ideas of how these would look in various contexts, I would search for “navy kitchen” on Pinterest.
Having said that, we had our espresso caninets professionally repainted in a cream hue two years after we first placed them in our kitchen fourteen years ago. Just too dark were the originals.
@Eminem This precisely. My closest friend has light floors, white countertops, and all dark blue cabinets. She has an open concept living room/ kitchen, and it seems extremely bright and airy. The kitchen would feel more cave-like if it were closed off and had darker surfaces, I’m sure. All you have to do is think about your home’s design, lighting, and other surfaces.
The black cabinets in our current home (17 years ago) gave the kitchen and dining area a cave-like atmosphere. We changed the first thing to green!
Our new apartment has dark blue cabinetry. Sadly, other than white or blue, no wall color seems to go with anything. The kitchen is dimly lighted by natural light and has a chilly atmosphere. With the exception of really fast meals, I’ve stopped baking and cooking since I think the space is so uninviting.
A navy kitchen can be elegant if balanced with light countertops and backsplashes. Natural light, warm metallic accents, and possibly using navy only on lower cabinets can prevent the space from feeling too dark. Many enjoy the color’s timelessness and practicality, especially when paired with proper lighting.
