Hello, I’m deciding between these two designs. We prefer the option with the sink on the island (sink in the center). However, I believe it would look awful if we placed a dish drying rack and soap supplies next to the sink, so we may opt for the L-shaped one. Which would you guys choose?
L shape, definitely. I don’t wanna be staring at a dirty sink when snacking, and that island is already pretty tiny so you wouldn’t be able to use it for anything other than the sink. And then what? You snack by the window?
Also, splashy splashy on the floor every time you wash up. The sink needs space on both sides. That island’s just way too small to be dual purpose. I have a “theoretically 4 person” island and really it’s more suitable for 2 unless you want to be banging each other’s elbows and knocking everything over. That one’s “theoretically 3 person”, and you’re trying to ram a sink in, which would realistically leave space for one person.
Also let it hang over a bit more so it can be used as a proper table top on the chair side.
I honestly like the 2nd design much more and I went for it myself. It did make me a lot cleaner and a lot less things are outside. And if the dishes are done by hand they are also moved to the drawers very very fast after that.
Main question here is do you have a dish washer or do you plan to do the dishes by hand all the time. If you have the dishwasher and will be doing dishes by hand rarely then go for the 2nd for sure.
For the detergent and the sponge and brush I bought a basket in Ikea that you can stretch based on the size you need and it fits the sink. Then all of the stuff you need is there but not on the counter. https://www.ikea.com/nl/en/p/skolaest-sink-container-extendable-60556685/
I will admit that the 2nd solution made me a minimalist because I really dislike the clutter in that area.
One of my friends has the second design, but his island is a large square with seating all the way around. He has a large what appears to be a sink, but it has drainage and racks inside to promote faster drying.
We have a dishwasher.
@Kristen I suppose L-shaped is the way .
