We used to believe it to be plate storage, but we’re not sure anymore.

Without a doubt, it’s a plate rack. Sincerely curious, what caused you to doubt that it is one? For the record, as part of a kitchen redesign several years ago, that was one of three things we chose to alter or remove shortly after it was installed.

@ReafeIndeed, the plate holder. All along, I hoped that they would be long enough to accommodate sheet pans. I don’t think so.

@Anne Give up hope now. They can build anything if you can imagine it. (And by “they,” I mean pretty much any handyman, trim carpenter, or woodworker, but a cabinet maker is a given.) The most difficult aspect is getting it finished, especially if it’s a refit that will take center stage in your kitchen like OP’s does.

For people who hand wash their dishes, it can serve as a plate drying rack if it has slots on the bottom. Wet dishes can drain over the sink thanks to it. It’s just plate storage else. This is evident in Europe, where many homes lack dishwashers. Most, though, aren’t constructed of wood.
