Thoughts on the kitchen makeover?

These are the sketches from our meeting with Home Depot; we are completely rebuilding our kitchen. As seen in the last photo with my shoddy sketch, the area to the right of the dishwasher will be used for a small kitchen/dining table. This backsplash is generic and needs to be altered. The property is mid-century modern overall, but we want a more contemporary kitchen that blends in with the decor.

Your suggested little table will bother you every day because that wall fully obstructs your kitchen. The way the little table is arranged, it is somewhat outside the kitchen. The information on its wall and its purpose is insufficient. It doesn’t look good that your backsplash has a strange little pattern on it either.

The subtle grayish green color of the lower cabinet looks fantastic.

@Reafe Although we can’t decide where else to put the table, I’m undoubtedly concerned about it. There isn’t another room where it could go because the house isn’t that large. Since the house was built on a crawl space and the wall is very structural, removing it would need extensive foundation work and result in the destruction of a large amount of our lovely original hardwood floors (the house was built in the 1940s). But I’m open to suggestions.

@Ramsay Is there not even an eating area? There really isn’t much space for anything other than this little bistro table, but I wouldn’t give up a more useful kitchen layout and storage for it.

Moving the sink to the middle of the windows with one or two taller open shelves above, bring the base cabinets all the way to the edge of the second window. It is not as good to have a sink next to a corner as it is to try and have it under a window. There isn’t enough drawer space; instead of doors, I would put one on the larger base next to the refrigerator. For additional prep room, you could definitely have a small, mobile island with a couple stools and a flip-out bar top.

Uninteresting microwave above hob. When cooking in pairs, you will obstruct each other’s path. It doesn’t feel comfortable to have to lean over a hot stove in order to access the microwave. Is there an extractor there as well?

Plates cabinet over dishwasher?

@Bailey We considered this, but were concerned that it might obstruct the corner window’s light too much. Open shelves, perhaps?

@Ramsay Is there really nowhere else that the table can be placed? I have the need to smash through walls and maybe even create a small island.

Yes, I would do it if you have excellent dishes and shelves.

However, the person doing the dishes would regret not having bowls and plates close by while emptying

You want as many lowers as possible to be drawer units. If the range wall is an exterior wall I’d put an actual vent hood instead of the microwave, especially if it’s a recirculating type, those are absolutely useless. In my remodel, I’m scaling my microwave down to a smaller countertop unit and putting it out of the way, when we thought about it, we use it for specific things like popcorn, or reheating leftovers, so it does not get prime real estate in the new layout. How many people live in the house? If it’s for a couple then the island plan with 2 seats would be better than what the HD person came up with. Also, I would second the idea of adding a couple more lower cabinets to the right of the dishwasher. I would again make sure they are drawers and you could use that for dish storage and silverware storage. An open shelf between the windows for glasses and mugs would be nice, but only if you are a neat person and also if you have a way to vent the exhaust from over the stove to the outside.

Would you prefer a better definition rendering to see how it will actually look?

Is there anything like cutting boards, cookie sheets, etc. stored in the slender cabinet to the right of the range? I kind of regret getting the one that pulls out for storing spices. It’s challenging to locate what I need on the lower shelves below. I wish I had gone with a set of drawers, similar to the ones you have on the left side of the stove. To solve the corner storage problem, extending the cabinets along the window wall as some people recommended would be useful.

I’m just interested in that refrigerator. It appears that the refrigerator is roughly 36" broad and 27" deep if those are 25" countertops. Do you already own the refrigerator? If you don’t, I would check it again. Finding a counter depth refrigerator that isn’t twice as expensive as a full depth is a sticking issue for me while I’m remodeling my own tiny kitchen.

@Hudson Excellent point. Although we don’t yet own the refrigerator, we will definitely consider the price before choosing the counter-depth style.

Island? blCW2Oh in the gallery at https://imgur.com

I just drew in an island. If you don’t want to build cabinets, you could just have a 4’ by 2’ island or table and utilize it as a central prep area by tucking 4 stools beneath it. When it’s time to eat, simply clear the table, arrange it, and slide out the stools, which can accommodate four people but are a touch close together. You could make it 48" by 30" if your family is four people.

There could be additional counter space and cabinets where your bench is located. If you placed this table in the middle, I wouldn’t move your suggested sink because it would interfere with your stove-fridge-sink triangle.
